Thursday night Asana Practice: Harvesting the Field of Gravity — Opening the Hips and Hamstrings 6-8:30pm.  This all-levels asana flow will focus on getting the hips, hamstrings and low back both strong and flexible. An exploration of your body’s relationship to gravity in asana is the secret to this, especially once we understand the dynamics of our feet, and how they activate the muscles of the legs and hips. The session will be engaging, informative and fun as we move through a variety of postures.

Friday afternoon: Finding Your Center: Understanding Chronic Pain problems and injury by understanding your posture 1-3:30pm.
Yoga ‘on the mat’ is meant to help us meet the challenges we face ‘off the mat‘ — particularly pain problems that arise by the many demands placed upon us in life. This session will introduce a deeper understanding of the ways we get bumped out of our center (physically) by these challenges, and the kinds of pain, both muscular and joint pain, that arise from that misalignment. The session will focus on how to recognize this, and how to get ourselves back on track with the essentials of a simple asana practice.

Friday evening: Secrets of the Neck and Shoulders in the Flow of Asana 6-8:30pm.
Our habits in how we use our neck and shoulders during our asana practice can be an obstacle to our full enjoyment of the practice, and we don’t even know we’re doing it!  Some simple cues for freeing the neck from tension and unlocking the shoulders will open up a whole new experience of freedom for you in your practice, which will carry over into everyday life. This will be an all-levels asana session, covering a variety of poses, including some simple backbends.

Saturday morning: Strengthening and Opening the Core — the deep experience of back bending 9:30am-12:00pm.  ‘Core work’ in hatha yoga is more than abdominal strengthening.  Beyond the tone of the abdominals, we look to the support of an even deeper set of muscles that keep our low back and sacrum happy while maintaining our strength, suppleness and adaptability. This asana session will explore the three basic actions of hatha yoga known as the ‘bandhas’ by which we maintain the health of the core. In particular, we will address the health of the central muscle known as the psoas in asana in general, and we will specifically explore stretching and releasing the psoas in backbending poses.

Saturday afternoon: Deep Relaxation, Pranayama and Meditation 2-4pm.  Asana practice brings us into a deeper relationship with the breath, and ultimately draws us naturally into a state of equanimity, an easy-going and inspired place of peace and renewal. The practice of meditation, coupled with breath practice and awareness, puts us in a position to fully savor that natural and spontaneous experience. In this session we will explore and experience a simple approach to deep relaxation known as the ‘sleep of the yogi’ or yoga nidra, followed by guided experiences of breathing practices and meditation practices — all for the sake of becoming centered and aware while turning inward to find renewal in the space of the heart. If you enjoy pausing to appreciate the sunrise, you’ll find that meditation reveals how there is always a sunrise to enjoy — on the inside.
